来自其设计者19世纪美国工程师George Ferris.该工程旨在为美国1893年举行的世界哥伦比亚博览会而建造，以媲美1889年巴黎世界博览会建造的埃菲尔铁塔。来自美国工程师George Washington Gale Ferris的姓。1893年出现在芝加哥世界博览会上，有36座轿厢，每个轿厢容纳40人，比现在大部分的摩天轮要大很多。这个Ferris可能是个来自地名的地名词，英国有两个家族姓Ferris，据说来自诺曼征服时（1066年）诺曼底一个叫Ferrières的地方。
